    Your video quality is actually insanely good. Even better than some professional documentaries! When it comes to Google or any other search engine: I don't believe that those kinds of updates will ruin experienced blogging websites in the long run, as like you said: if Google messes things up, and people who are searching are not satisfied with the results, they have to go back in algorithmic version. As people will start using other search engines, like Bing, Yahoo, etc. who are showing better results. It's actually that simple. On the other hand, the search intents changed as well over time: I give you an example. Lately I was looking for a coding problem I had in Git. I found the answer within two seconds on Reddit, as Reddit was suggested as the first SERP. Now I imagine that I have to scroll through long website articles to find the answer I need, where there is still no guarantee that I will if the search query is very specific. Actually, I had this many times already with very specific search queries and there was not one single website covering it properly … but Reddit or Quora. And if there is one small paragraph from one user on Reddit as an example, I thank this dude more than a great looking website which gives me no results at all, just some beautiful images. This wastes my time searching. I can understand that it sucks seeing insane drops in clicks and revenue, however, many famous SEOs like Matt Diggity already said: start building your social channels and e-mails lists to diversify your revenue. In today's world of many monthly updates, it's actually insane to rely only on one single income stream or website. Your website could be hacked one day, hopefully not, but you get the point I guess. Losing huge traffic sucks, especially if you know that you are the best content creator on that special topic, but it's always a far better strategy long-term building multiple income streams. And don't forget about link-building, which becomes even more important nowadays due to AI floating the internet. My guess, as I analyze many websites with crappy GPT copies from top to bottom. Still, I hope that Google will be a little more “stable” in the future. I already know companies who laid off 50 % of their staff due to Google updates. This is not a joke. But it's not Google fault. Google is just a service. It's because the people running the companies relied on one single website or one collaboration. If there is no diversity, we rely on luck. And businesses, especially if your life depends on it, shouldn't be build solely on luck.

      Thank you for the detailed and insightful comment! You are on point on everything, apart from my videos being better than pro docs! 😁 I appreciate the support; I try to make every video look a bit more like a proper documentary. Lots of room for improvement. In the end, Google's visitors like you and me will dictate how the search engine will need to work. I'm sure Google's updates reflect that behavior and the data they collect.

      @@JimMakosCom I run different websites right now, with all three in different focus areas. I can assure you that YMYL website was hit by far the craziest and there are very good reasons for this, as for instance the backlink profile of this project is not good at all. The other websites are either rising or staying the same as one year ago. And this what I said before: for those “important” topics, Google is probably put in more weight into solid backlinks as really well-written content. I don't have a lot of background with your project, but if you don't do it yet, consider it: make one channel for your website on UA-cam and talk about your expertise there - only this topic and connect all articles with every single video you put out. There are three benefits: a) you give your new audience to dive even deeper into your content on your website; b) you give Google signals that your website does not only write about stuff but publish videos, and c) you build a list of readers and customers over the time you can monetize differently. Why I am telling you this? There are so many examples of small UA-cam Channels which make six figures doing exactly this strategy without relying on Google solely. And you as a fantastic video creator have all the tools to do it. There is a saying: If you see that something doesn't work anymore, you need to try different approaches. If you change nothing, nothing will change. Keep on grinding and pushing … because what else is there to rely on? For sure not Google but only your own skill set. 💪

      I've heard that's the ultimate solution when everything else doesn't work: Copy the content to a new domain and start from scratch. Eventually it will rank at the same places the old domain used to rank. Nothing says that a future update won't take that down as well, though.🙄

    Google - the bastions of helpful content and decide that Reddit is a good source, sure. Says it all - 90% trash on that site, just like their 'trusted sources' who fill their authority sites with utter garbage listicles, coupons and other rubbish. Maybe, we need Google to drop its audience by a healthy percentage and that might be good.

    Jim, I feel this. My site was the best in my niche, bringing in 100k pageviews a month. I write the absolute best content and was rewarded handsomely for it. On top of two salaries in the house, I was bringing in 3k-5k extra per month. It was a beautiful couple of years…until September 2023. My blog has lost 80% of my previous traffic, and with that, around 80% of my income from my blog. Horrible how Google prioritizes Reddit and other forum sites over actual helpful content. Wish you luck with a recovery.

    • @JimMakosCom
      @JimMakosCom 6 днів тому

      Those are about the same figures with mine. 80% is devasting, especially since it directly corresponds to revenue and income. I may not be affected that hard and Reddit isn’t competing with my website (yet), but with only one salary in the house, I might be more stressed. Did your site drop rankings in general, or was it Reddit/Quora/AI stealing your traffic? Best of luck to you, as well! ✌️

      @@JimMakosCom I’m sorry to hear that about your site and household income. You guys may have to start hustling to bring in some money until you can get your site back. I was looking at going full time into blogging until mine tanked. As for my site, I was page 1 on almost every keyword I was looking to rank for, with many posts ranked top 1, 2, or 3. Then literally within a month of the update, almost everything I wrote - I’m talking lengthy, detailed content that gave tons of helpful information - dropped off the radar and didn’t even rank on any of the first few pages. Almost every keyword I used to rank for has Reddit in one of the top 3 spots. Really sad that 6 years of work, with everything written personally by me has fallen, all because Google is prioritizing forums and big campanies.

  • @APalmieri

    I don't understand the point of this video: if Google's algorithm aims to eliminate all the rubbish of "smart" content creators who play on SEO flaws to position themselves, why have you also been trapped in the sieve of rubbish sites? If you have a site with valuable content you should be rewarded in terms of SEO, not penalized and you should see this algorithm change as a godsend. What am I missing? Frankly, I've seen many videos of desperate people (marketers, creators of cashcow channels, etc.) who had a "guilty conscience", but never that of a person who actually worked well and who complains about the algorithm update.

    • @JimMakosCom
      @JimMakosCom 6 днів тому

      Honestly, the website I’m trying to recover didn’t have THAT much valuable content. I can tell you that my blog is way more valuable; that’s why traffic and rankings have been improving lately as I’m building more on my personal brand. That website may not be “rubbish” but it certainly doesn’t win any rewards! Or maybe I’m too harsh on myself for the work that I’ve done there and try to justify the drop in traffic and rankings. But the difference with my own blog is night and day. I hope this clarifies the video’s point better now.

    Hey Jim, Look at you! Off the cuff content creation & a new Podcast in your content library. I'm honered you mentioned me in the podcast/video. ❤ I'm glad I inspired you to take action and record a new piece of content, but you have to thank yourself as it's you who's all doing the hard work. Honest Feedback (not trolling): I love the fact that you've pushed the publish button on what is still quite a raw version. *I'm a perfectionist myself, and that's also my biggest problem -> I'm still learning this lesson: "Perfect is the Enemy of Good" Leaving in the spider fright was very entertaining 😂. I understand you do struggle a bit sometimes to find the right words, you're not alone... Though you know what they say, practice makes perfect. You need to get out of your comfort zone to gain experience. I'm curious to know how much time you spend editing? If you conbine the time recording + editing was this less han your previous method (using scripting) ? Cheers Dude! Still it was a necessary experiment, I learned a few things and it was another chance to leave my comfort zone. It's a win in my book.✌️ thank you for the inspiration! More advice is always welcome.

    I’ve run a music production blog since 2016. It made up a majority of my income until last year. Google tanked my search rankings and decimated my website. The site still brings in some profit but it’s a fraction of what it used to be. I’ve been tracking the development of AI since Chat GPT blew up and knew it was only a matter of time until something like this happened. To AI-proof myself, I started an in-person service business almost five months ago. All the digital marketing skills I learned from running my blog transferred over and helped me scale this business incredibly quickly. One of the contractors I work with had the exact same thing happen to him, which prompted him to start an in-person business as well. These Google updates have destroyed the livelihoods of many bloggers I know, but as the saying goes, adapt or die.

    • @JimMakosCom

    You are speaking good enough english for people to understand (English isn't my native language), it is definitely not annoying to listen to you. Now, I'm not an expert on this, so take my comment with a grain of salt. Writing a full script before you press record, takes a lot of time. 2 hours for 3000 words, as mentioned in this video-podcast. Having a script will help you stay on topic and create a more "efficient" podcast. But you lose some of the authenticity. * I have the same issue when recording myself, It's been years since my last recording and decided to go the blogging route as well. It feels more Efficient (and more in your comfort zone) to script everything, you even reduce editing time, but it's not. This is probably why you stopped after recording 2 podcasts. Don't take my comment personal, it's feedback. The advice I got, which I'm now sharing with you, is to only write down the topics (and sub-topics) you want to talk about, and set them in the right order. Especially if you're already familiar with the topic you want to talk about, as this will save you at least 1.5 hours of scripting. When recording: Start talking about the topics in the order that makes sense. Keep the camera and audio recording running at all times, even when you sneeze or fumble. When you fumble, clap your hands 3 times and start where you left off. This clap will makes things easier during the video & audio editing process, as it stands out.

I'm adding new content as well as ramping up UA-cam significantly as well as Instagram and Facebook to try and drive traffic from there. I've also reached out to many brands to try to help amplify my content as Google seems to think that is a good signal. I empathize totally....I am in the same position....racing against time. What Google has done to smaller publishers is horrible. And the worst thing...even though we may be working like mad to try and "fix" our sites, there is NO guarantee that the things we are doing are the correct ones. Or indeed if there is a way to "fix" a site at all. Maybe once out sites have these HCU "qualifiers" on them, there is no way to get rid of it. Because of the lack of transparency and honesty from Google, we just don't know and we have to guess. I wish you the best of luck to save your business.

    • @JimMakosCom
      @JimMakosCom 23 дні тому

      That's EXACTLY what's going on. We are all doing guesswork here trying to create great content for the user while trying to reverse engineer Google's algorithm by trial and error. And even if you create the greatest piece of content, an update can derank it sometime in the future. How many 10-year-old articles show up in search results today? It seems we need to keep on updating every single article to keep its rankings. On the other hand, it's a competitive world out there. Thanks for the wishes and for watching. Good luck to you and stay strong. ✌️

    • @GrantMucha
      @GrantMucha 21 день тому

      @@JimMakosCom this is where things go sideways. > not trying to reverse engineer anything, it's impossible > HCU, while content-focused is more like HEU (helpful everything update, not solely content) > HCU often miss-categorized and actually instead intent-shifts ex: 90k monthly volume broad to 1k volume-specific (not HCU, avoid chasing broad topics) > having audited numerous sites this week, I've seen plenty of content ranking as far back as 2018 (you only republish if you significantly improve content quality, doing so without is even worse) > AI tools like Topic, Rankmath, Surfer, etc. are running sites into the ground if used without owner oversight. If you optimize anywhere near the max of any of these tools and you are beyond over-optimized, jamming in keywords, mixing in miss-matched intent, and making recovery or success impossible. Proactive > Reactive > Inactive > Misdirected 1. Proactive: owners that put in the work and finished prior to Aug. 23, gained from all of the recent updates. (the percentage of owners with this mindset is extremely low) 2. Reactive: those who started late after the fact (Oct-Dec) are starting to recover now after significantly improving everything across their business, brand, website, and content. 3. Inactive: the do-nothing crowd, often influenced into doing nothing by constant stream from misdirected owners, are going to face a long 6-12 month struggle (or give up entirely at this point) 4. Misdirected: have given up entirely, took to posting negatively about everything, everywhere, and spend every minute on everything but their business/success (the noise, infecting mindsets everywhere) Do the things no one else is doing or willing to do! Purpose + Effort + Consistency If your purpose is misaligned, effort and consistency are lost. How to recover, forget everything, stop spending time externally, and focus on quality in the following order: 1. business 2. brand 3. site 4. content > last I note that content is last, as it will be extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible if 1-3 are ignored. As you noted yourself, "even if you create the greatest piece of content", well it's not just about content, and it's been this way for years now. As for the guessing component, if you put quality first in everything, it's easier than you think. However, it's by no means something you'll execute quickly. It will turn into a week-over-week, month-over-month, never-ending pursuit to increase internal quality. And the main problem, most didn't care as long as revenue was flowing and just didn't bother. Have a great weekend!
